Experienced Vet providing at-home euthanasia for Dogs & Cats across Durham and the North East.

What to Expect

From the first point of contact to the last, I will always do my very best to ensure that I make you and your faithful friend feel at ease.

If you have a pet whom you would like to arrange to say goodbye to in the comfort of your own home, give me a call or send me a message and we can have a discussion about your beloved faithful friend, ensuring that you are comfortable with all that is involved.

Saying Goodbye…

When I arrive at your home, I’ll introduce myself to your pet and gain a sense of what they will be comfortable with – some pets like lots of fuss and pats, others prefer to be admired from a safe distance. I’ll then ensure I explain what will happen, answer any questions family members may have and then proceed to sedation of your pet.

Sedation is used prior to euthanasia to ensure the most peaceful passing, enabling pets to fall into a deep sleep. Sedation is given via an injection under the skin or into the muscle, very similar to how a vaccination is administered.

This is the time in which I encourage family members to talk to their pet, tell them how much they are loved, and say goodbye. It can take anywhere from 5 – 30 minutes for deep sleep to be achieved. Once your pet is asleep, I will shave a very small patch of hair on your pets leg so I can insert a cannula (a needle that is secured into the vein).

As pets are asleep, they will feel no pain, stress or discomfort. This allows me to administer the final medication that will help your pet pass peacefully.

Once your pet has passed, I can stay for as long as is needed by the family, as I am there for support at such a difficult time. If you wish, paw prints, nose prints or hair clippings can be taken for memorial keepsakes – these can be done free of charge.

Aftercare…

There are a few aftercare options for your beloved pet after they pass.

Cremation – although we do not offer a cremation service, we can recommend local pet crematoriums, who I can assure are compassionate and caring, treating your faithful friend with the dignity they deserve. You can transport your pets body to the crematorium yourself or arrange for them to collect shortly after I visit.

Home burial – this is an option for small pets, but we advise that advice is sought from local council for guidance on how this should be carried out safely.

Support – Losing a pet is often one of the most difficult experiences we will encounter. They are not just pets, they are family members and leave a giant hole in our lives when they leave us. The grief we suffer afterwards can feel unbearable – I can offer bereavement support to help you talk through your thoughts and feelings at such a heart breaking time, offering empathy as both a vet and fellow pet owner who has suffered loss – enquire for more information.
